5 Signs You’re Drowning in Useless Information (And What the Quran Says About It)

June 4, 2026

The Quran reserves its description of true faith for ulul albab, people of sound minds (3:190)1. In the first episode of the Foundations of Faith series, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan explains that a sound mind is one free from vanities, a mind not buried under useless information. Here are five signs the information age is crowding out your clarity and what to do about it.

1. You Know the Stats but Not the Signs

You can name the athletes, the contracts and the corruption charges, but the sky and the earth have stopped speaking to you. The Quran calls the heavens, the earth, the night and the day miraculous signs for people of sound minds (3:190)1. Information that does not make you a better human being is, in Ustadh Nouman’s words, fluff.

2. Your Free Moments Default to a Screen

The honest conversation with yourself, the one that brought Ustadh Nouman back to faith, can only happen when the noise stops. If every quiet moment is immediately filled by a feed, a show or a game, the mind never gets the stillness that reflection requires.

3. You Share More Than You Reflect

Look at what you forward on WhatsApp or post online. Is it mostly entertainment that vanishes from the mind within seconds? What we send out is a mirror of what we take in.

4. Religious Reminders Don’t Move You Anymore

You listen to lectures and wonder why nothing changes. The container only pours out what it contains. An apple does not undo a diet of junk food andone good reminder cannot outweigh hours of mental junk. The fix is twofold: cut the junk and feed the mind well, at the same time.

5. You Can’t Remember the Last Time the Sky Amazed You

Stuck in traffic at sunset with nothing else to do, you finally notice the orange sky and find yourself mesmerized. That moment of wonder is the natural state of a clear mind. If it never happens anymore, the clutter has gone too deep.

None of these signs are permanent. We live in an age of choice, which means every day we decide what enters our minds. That choice makes us responsible and it also means the detox can start today.

An ayah is a […]

Faith Needs Both the Heart and the Mind: The Quran’s Formula for Balance

Can you argue someone into believing in Allah? In the second episode of the Foundations of Faith series, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan says no and the reason reveals something essential about how faith actually grows.  Why Debates Don’t Build Faith  A debate, he points out, is usually two people with big egos trying to disprove each other. The First Foundation of Faith: Why Imaan Begins with Clear Thinking

What does it actually take to believe? Not to inherit faith from your parents or absorb it from your surroundings, but to own it for yourself.  In the first episode of the Foundations of Faith series, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan answers that question in an unexpected way. The foundations of faith, he argues, do not begin with proofs […]
