Life’s challenges can weigh us down, leaving us feeling stuck or powerless. In these moments, the Quran offers profound guidance to lift us up. Today, let’s reflect on the word “قُم” (Qum), which Allah used when addressing the Prophet ﷺ in two critical moments of his life.
This command—”قُم”—is not just a word; it’s a call to action, a source of divine motivation and a reminder of the strength Allah places within us.
The word “قُم” (Qum) comes from the root ق-و-م, which means to rise, stand or establish something. This one-word command holds incredible depth, as it implies not just physical standing but a complete state of readiness, resolve and purpose.
In Surah Al-Muzzammil: قُمِ ٱلَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا
“Stand [to pray] at night, except for a little.” [73:2]
Here, Allah instructs the Prophet ﷺ to stand for the night prayer, not just as a ritual but as a source of strength and preparation for the monumental task ahead. The night prayer, Qiyam al-Layl, is a spiritual exercise to steady the soul, strengthen the heart and find clarity amidst life’s challenges.
The command “قُم” is immediate and decisive—it’s not a suggestion but a direct order to rise above internal overwhelm by connecting with Allah. It reminds us that prayer is the foundation for all strength, a reminder to start with ourselves before facing the world.
In Surah Al-Muddaththir: قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
“Arise and warn.” [74:2]
In this verse, “قُم” takes on a different dimension. Allah commands the Prophet ﷺ to stand up and begin his mission of da’wah, regardless of the opposition he faced. The focus here is external action—stepping into the hostile environment of Makkah and delivering Allah’s message without fear.
Notice the simplicity of the instruction: “قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ”—”Rise and warn.” There are no conditions, no mention of whether people will accept or reject the message. This command places the emphasis on effort, not outcomes.
The word “قُم” appears in both surahs, but with distinct contexts:
1. Internal Strength (Surah Al-Muzzammil):
The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to rise in prayer at night. This quiet, personal act connects him with Allah, builds resilience and prepares him spiritually for his mission.
2. External Action (Surah Al-Muddaththir):
The Prophet ﷺ is then commanded to rise and warn the people. This outward action requires facing the external world, regardless of opposition or challenges.
A Universal Message in “قُم”
Allah’s command to “rise” applies to all of us. Here are some ways we can implement this lesson in our lives:
1. For Internal Challenges: When overwhelmed by life, rise in prayer. The act of standing before Allah grounds us, providing clarity and peace.
2. For External Challenges: When faced with societal pressures or fear, rise to meet them. Trust in Allah and take the first step, even if it feels difficult.
This seamless integration of internal worship and external effort is a hallmark of the Prophet’s ﷺ mission and it serves as a blueprint for us to follow.
The lessons of “قُم” remind us that life’s pressures—whether internal or external—are opportunities to grow and find purpose. When overwhelmed, turn to Allah in prayer. When facing challenges, rise and take action.
May Allah grant us the strength to rise, both spiritually and physically, and fulfill our responsibilities with confidence and faith.
