What do you do when you want your children to understand the Quran, but nothing seems to hold their attention?
Khalid Thakur, an electrical engineering designer based in Saudi Arabia, knows that struggle well. He and his wife have two sons, one at university and one in 9th grade. Their goal as parents was simple to state and hard to achieve: they wanted their sons to study the Quran with its meaning at least once alongside their formal education and to understand it well enough to act on it.
A Search Every Parent Knows
Khalid looked everywhere. He searched for a platform in English that explained the Quran in a way his sons could relate to and connect with. He could not find one. He even tried teaching them himself, but it did not hold their interest. Many parents will recognize this exact moment, the point where you have the intention and the effort but not the tool.
Then the family discovered Bayyinah and began with the Concise Commentary. Khalid encouraged his sons to watch the first few episodes. What happened next, he did not have to push.
From Encouragement to Eagerness
“Soon their interest grew naturally,” Khalid says. “Now they even ask during exams, ‘Aren’t we watching the Tafsir today?'” Read that again. During exam season, when most students are negotiating for less responsibility, his sons were asking for their Quran lesson.
This is the outcome behind one of the most beloved du’aas in the Quran, the prayer of those who ask Allah for families that bring coolness to their eyes: رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ “Our Lord, grant us fromour spouses and our children comfort for our eyes” (25:74). Khalid describes seeing in his sons “a depth and maturity that I had always hoped for but didn’t know how to nurture.” That is what comfort for a parent’s eyes looks like in practice.
The Right Language for a New Generation
Khalid puts his finger on something important about this moment in time. Many young people need guidance presented in a language and style they can relate to. The clarity, structure and thoughtful connections in the explanations made the difference for his family where everything else had failed. “For parents, especially those from the subcontinent,” he says, “Bayyinah is not merely beneficial. It is invaluable.”
His closing du’aa is one every teacher hopes to receive: that Allah makes this work a source of guidance for generations to come and continuous reward for those behind it.
