Protection from Shuhh — Why 'Protected' Not 'Overcomes'

وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul — it is those who will be the successful.

At-Taghabun 64:16 — Sahih International

You hit it exactly on the head. I cannot protect myself from the darkest parts of myself. I need Allah's protection from it. Just as we ask Allah's protection from Shaytan, from the evil eye, from the jinn — we are being told to seek Allah's protection from the darkness within ourselves.

For those unfamiliar: شُحّ comes from a root that describes land so dry and rocky that when water falls on it, it just bounces off — it does not sink in. A human being who has become so self-absorbed that they cannot see the pain of anything else. All they can see is their own revenge, pride, need to dominate, to humiliate, to be victorious — regardless of who they crush or what they destroy in pursuit of it. We all have it within us.

And yet Allah also gave us the ability to seek protection. And in the same area of the Quran, there is an acknowledgment: yes, we do need divine protection — but Allah is also saying we have means within ourselves to seek it. Just as He gave us an immune system to protect us from the very bacteria swimming inside our own bodies right now, He gave us the capacity to seek refuge from our own spiritual darkness.

As for which ayah anchors me in moments of defensiveness, anger, and attachment — this very ayah is actually the one: وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ. When I feel that tightness, that need to hold on or lash out or win — this ayah reminds me: my success hinges on being protected from exactly this.
