Asking Allah for More While Being Grateful

وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَـٰمُوسَىٰ لَن نَّصْبِرَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامٍۢ وَٰحِدٍۢ فَٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ

And [recall] when you said, 'O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers...'

Al-Baqarah 2:61 — Sahih International

You can be grateful for one thing and still want something more and still be grateful. These two things are not mutually exclusive.

Think about it simply: I'm grateful for the sandwich I ate. But I'd like some fries too. Stop. Why are you making it so complicated? Asking for more does not make you ungrateful for what you already have. Those are completely separate categories.

In fact, Allah Himself tells us: وَٱسْـَٔلُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مِن فَضْلِهِ — "Ask Allah from His favor." The favors you are asking for are the ones you don't already have. Why would Allah tell you to ask and then say: haven't I given you enough already, shame on you for asking more? Where did that logic come from?

You said at the beginning of your question: "I'm grateful for what I have." That is shukr. Asking for more afterward is du'a. They coexist. Thank Allah for blessings, ask Allah for more blessings. He gave them to you in the first place — why would the act of asking for more negate the gratitude you already have?
